FB Project..Southern Chassis Coil Over Frontend

Post by fingers »

Got the FB backed into the shed today and the frontend painted and ready to assemble and install..the Project will include a 327 ci V8 and th400 Trans ...just ordered a heap of edelbrock gear including heads and cam from the States got a great deal with the exchange rate being so high ...
Has anyone tried to use the column and the shaft from an LH Torana steering column and adapt the honey pot and horn and steering wheel from the FB to it to achieve a colapsable column and keeping it looking standard ..

Got side tracked making my own collapsible steering column ....after I spoke to the engineer ...if the quality and engineering is not up to scratch on my home made conversion it aint gunna get registered ...so packed all the bits and pieces from 1/2 dozen different steering columns and went searching ...I came up with this guy ...ex CRS I believe ...The guys name who does a collapsable fb column is George Windus you can call him on 0421053733 ...I have just ordered one thru him.... not cheap but its legal and engineered .....you need to give him a steering column from a hq or similar and the top of the fb column ....for your money you get a steering column modified to hook up to any size shaft on your steering rack the honey pot welded and machined and primer etched readyfor painting and uses the standard fb indicator mechanism and all the engineering paperwork to get reg approval ...and this is the greatest problem you can have if not engineered correctly ...if you havent spoken to an engineer before you do any modification you could waste a lot of money and time ...,my engineer wants collapsible column with the 327 Chev conversion he will accept non collapsible on red motor conversion this apparently is a requirement in Victoria by Vicroads .......I will keep posting as i get further into this project ..help this helps anyone thinking of doing the same thing ...next job will be rust repairs ...
thanks

Fingers - got some bigger pics and more info on your front end ????

I made my own column using a VB-L lower half and EK top half , theres a bloke in Brizzvegas who does them as well - Nomad has one.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

will do some next week, mate ...just held up waiting for my springs to come back from the powder coater ...then assemble it ....I asked the engineer here about welding a collapsile section to my fb upper ...thought he was gunna collapse , it would need xraying, crack testing , engineering, pastuerising and the list went on .......Fingers

Steering column arrived today ..........looks good ...also my new 2 speed wiper setup from Castlemaine Auto Electrics looks good too ...thats 2 requirements of the Engineer covered ..still waiting for the frontend to be finished ... .tried to download photos but having some trouble ...the message above the post says the board attachment quota has been reached ..........
Thanks for the advice below .........Hope this works ..

Just mounted the new wiper switch and it fits into the original position and the original FB wiper knob and facia plate all fit ...looks like nothing has been modified ..but the switch now has 2 positions for the different speeds and push in for washers ...very happy with this conversion so far.........

Yep it worked click on the link below for the slide show ..............

cool, can't wate to see one of these front ends in a car and on the road, although i don't think i could ever afford or justify the cost :(

what are the stub axles ? holden ?

wonder how one of these fronts would go if you wanted a red 6 or grey motor as a red 6 the mounts are right on the back edge of a HR cross member and a grey mounts to the outrigger

Hey Harry .......
The stub axles are custom made by heath as are the steering arms , the discs are commodore with &*#@ stud pattern , the calipers are also commodore ..(I,m using &*#@ stud pattern on the front to match the rear ...&*#@ 9 inch diff)....he uses the same stub axles on all his frontends ,I believe ,and just drills the different stud patterns to suit .........I will ask about the different engine mounts next time i,m in there but i,m sure there are options available for the red and grey 6,s..The rack is a rebuilt standard torana....mate the cost isnt that different to a rebuilt HR frontend when ya work it out ...it cost me over $2500.00 for a CRS modded HR frontend last time i fitted one ...and ya get a good turning circle and little bump steer ..Cheers mate ..Fingers

Rear parcel shelf replacement nearly done havent welded it in yet as the car is booked in in about 4 weeks to get mini tubs done at Southern Chassis Works and the 9 diff fitted .. they will have excellent access to the wheel wells ..have attached some photo of the rear shelf being done ... I found that by cutting the whole lot out at the factory fitting points a lot easier than welding just the parcel shelf ....the parcel shelf actually runs right thru to the rubber channel in the boot ,one piece of steel the ledge that the rear windows sits on appears to be glued in . you can sand blast under the rear shelf and the panel that runs between the rear window and the boot just 2 short welds on the quarter panels and a few spot weld on the parcel shelf ...check out the photos
