Rough $$ for a de-chrome, fill and paint on the EKs body...

Hi all, am after a rough $$ value for a re-spray on the EK.
OK, Here's the rundown.
• Pretty good paint to start with.
• All existing chrome to go and holes to be filled (incl. bonnet bird and all side trim, special badges and all rear trim) NO, i'm not going to sell the trim.
• The roof to stay white, not to be painted... JUST THE BODY.

• Anyone recommend a painter in inner Melbourne??

Don't want something fancy, it's a mild custom, so i'm after a suede/matt/primer finish. I'm still up in the air regarding colour (won't be black/grey). Any help and tips would be much appreciated.

If youre only going for a matt finish , have a go at it yourself - it is easier than you think !
As for filling all the holes , use a mig and a big lump of copper held by a willing accomplice behind the hole-the copper will allow you to weld the hole without blowing big holes in the panel - once you have filled the hole , have an airline handy and cool the weld with air until you can keep your hand on it - this will minimise distortion.
The best bet would be to practice on an old panel until you get the hang of it .

Blacky does the copper become part of the weld or does it come away after you have welded the hole?

G`day stranger !! The weld does not stick to the copper , it flows over the top of it , leaving the back of the weld smooth while also acting as a heatsink , drawing the heat away from the panel you are welding.
I use a copper drift , about two inches round and ten inches long for doing this , using this method I welded up all the tonneau clip holes in the side of my ute from start to finish in one night - it works a treat !

Can't recommend anyone in inner Melbourne, but Mordialloc, Gollings smash repair are very familiar with EK's. But if you are going to go for a flat finish maybe try it yourself. If you don't have access to a welder perhaps pay to have these done.

BUT a flat finish does not hide poor bodywork. I still don't get the flat finish as it takes just as much effort to achieve as gloss, Flakes and Candies always look better offset by glossy paint. Be brave and go shiny just pick a really old color, factory fifties or sixties. After all the only reason the car was flat was cause it was not painted.....it was in primer.

My EK will be bright bright white and Candy Red roof also mild custom, but running side trim although somewhat modified....

As a side note most of the trim holes are small enough to be soldered up! Just like lead filling... The only holes to be welded are the front and rear holes on each door all the intermediate ones are small screws!

I paid $1200 for the paint on my car, this included
- trim holes in the boot filled
- trim holes in the bonnet filled
- repair plates to the boot hinge mounts
- 1 hole in the engine bay filled
- Spray paint entire outside of the body (no jambs even) in black acrylic mixed 1 to 1 with "insert name of forgotten product here" to get a satin finish.

Knowing what I know now, I'd probably give it a go myself in future.
