Post by skin_dog »

Ok, so i'm swallowing all my pride so here we go...
I know what a Powerglide is only because i had one in my HT prem, but now i have the EK and want to know what's what..
Hydromatic? Trimatic? (obviously 3 but manual or auto?) What do i have with my "three on the tree" grey?
Thanks guys :oops:

Powerglide = 2 speed auto.
Trimatic = 3 speed auto.
Your 3 on the tree Grey has a 3 speed manual.

that will take very little abuse :wink: :)
hydramatic also 3 speed
there's also 3 speed syncro box (you can put it back to first while still moving
aussie 4 speed near identical to look at as 3 speed syncro but it's a 4 speed box

G'day UTEK,

Don't be embarrassed to ask questions here - everyone has to start somewhere, and even the experts learn something as they go (that's probably what makes them experts :D ). Anyone who thinks they know it all is in for some hard falls.

As Trev and Ratbox have pointed out, chances are your "3 on the tree" is the original 3-speed manual. They often get called "crash boxes" or "crunch boxes" because they don't have syncro on first (try putting it back from 2nd to 1st with the car moving and you get a wonderful crunching sound :shock: as the gears try to engage at different speeds... not good for the life of the box). Some expressions you will now get to use:
a) if you can't find 'em, grind 'em.
b) if you got teeth you have to clean 'em.
c) like a true prizefighter, it spat out a few teeth and kept going (from one of Thommo's recent posts... love it 8) ).

You have to learn somehow, no need to be embarassed.

Hah, thanks for uplifting words Harko.
And thanks to everyone else for the comforting replies, i've already experienced that lovely "crash-box" noise, Harv, as i try to engage first while rolling. I was told that if i double clutched and gave them a chance to sync themselves i could do it but that doesn't seem to be the case. Oh well, the people behind me can just wait as i come to a complete stop then take off again.
Is there any different gearbox options that will bolt straight on?
