the problem is that older strommys are set up so that the old linkage pull down on the outside edge of the carb or if it is an hD/Hr type it twists on the end of the carb so that the carb linkage rotates anticlockwise on application of the throttle when looking at it from the firewall.
with cable throttle onto a stromberg if you run the cable via the least "Bendy" route the cable comes over the rocker cover.
when you put your foot on the throttle the cable retracts.
which means the cable has to be set up so that it pulls from under the carb linkage and up towards the tappet cover.
You cant hook it to the top of the cark linkage it simply wont work.
.
I used a VC commodore cable and made a outer cable support fork that bolts onto a manifold stud and holds the cable via the outer cable adjustment thread. The inner cable comes down next to the tappet cover and onto the bottom side of the linkage . i made up a 6mmm bolt out of running thread to hold the nipple that the cable attaches to.
So... there ya go... clear as mud

.
end result is a really smooth throttle . probably would have been a bit less complicated if i had gone to the wreckers and bought all the gadgetry that bolts onto the carb and manifold of a VC Commy.
My ute is running a 186 which clears the firewall by about 12mm so cable was the way to go. I have run this set up since i installed the motor about 2 months ago. no probs. spent last night fitting the X2 carbs and manifold back on the car and used the same gadgets to get them opening properly when i stuff my foot into it.......... now if i could just get the 2 or 'em to breath properly at the same time instead of mucking up i will be a happy man.
Nothing wrong with the old system . Holden wouldnt have used it if they thought it was gunna give ya trouble. Its just mugs like me that mess with things god created that have troubles . But once the troubles are sorted it is a much smoother throttle. Devilrod is right in saying you can fiddle with pedal position to suit your driving style and comfort.
once happy with the position ya can be rough and screw it in place with a coupla self tappers or do it with a couple of captive nuts set into the floor.
