hey west why not look around for a 138 red or a 149 red and then just bolt up the five speed you have, or do you know any body handy with fabrication you could make a thing i've seen before, looks like a shark jaw and bolts where the inspection cover goes and has the brackets for the rear engine mounts
or you could sell it to me

the conversion was to suit hq (for my tonner) the reason i took it out was because the bellhousing cracked  it even broke the "legs" if thats what u call them, off the motor
the gearbox worked great, smooth with no other problems.
it has a new clutch, bearing and carrier.
i paid $600 + the new clutch etc(cant remember $$? bout $200ish :? )
ratbox if you want it $450.
i think im gonna bite the bullit and go small red6 and traumatic :?
that way it keeps it auto 8)

i mean't sell me the wagon, do you know that small red 138 or 149 although hard to find you don't need engineers report :)
and something that i may or may not have done is put a 149 red motor number on a 186 and grind the size off the block as 149's don't have a size on the side of the block i refer to this as an external destroke

I have seen that "external destroke" before, funnily enough I think it was in one or two of my cars! But my memory might be fading!

I was after a 149 red a while back and couldn't find any for months then all of a sudden they started to appear here and there via the grapevine and ringing around.
Bought a complete rebuilder for $100,good low mileage ex EH Holden one complete for $150 and another old runner for $80 via evil bay and a 138 red long engine from evilbay for $30.
Transport costs is the biggest killer, if you have a trailer and can pick up yourself you can save heaps.

I know a wrecker in Tenterfield who has a few 149's but thats a fair way from Cowra. There's an old Holden wrecker near Cooma that had a complete 138 in an LJ Torana but he wanted an arm and leg for it so I let him keep it.

The 138's are harder to find than 149's but there are some still around here and there.

I'll keep an eye out for either engines if you want.

Terry.

Forgot something,

Here in N.S.W you are (at least at the moment) allowed a 15% increase in capacity over the maximum size engine without having to have an engineers cert. So a grey powered car can have a red up to 158.7 cubes which negates fitment of a 161 (just) but allows 149 fitment.

My local AUVIS (blue slip ) inspector also said that he would pass a 149 red in an FB without any required modifications as long as the engine mounts were welded properly and fitted to his satisfaction.Kingpin front/drum brake with 138 or 149 red is OK.

From memory the EH 179's didn't have the "179" cast in the block same as the 149's but later ones in the HD's did.....Smooth might be able to confirm or otherwise.
Wonder where you can buy those may or may not engine number stamps  .
