HR steering box into EK

Post by Leon B »

I got an exellent HR (late modle) steeringbox given to me.
I looked at length and steeringwheel bolt up and all looked good. The only thing is the steering wheel would have been 1 inch closer to the dash. Not a major problem as it would still have room.

So EK box and columb out, HR one in to check....shock horror, bolt hole spacing is out by half a bolt!! Insert profanities here ------> @#&* That @#&*ing thing!

I just want to know as the HR box is in brand new condition, and I mean out of a back of shed wreck with 6k miles on it and was only kept for the motor for an old type cement mixer truck. (tree, ditch rollover combo, no strairght anything)

Will the internals fit into my box?
I havent pulled either appart yet.

Cheers
BB

I think there was a discussion on this on the FE/FC forum a few years back now and, from memory, a couple of blokes that fitted the HR columns in to their FE/FC's just slotted the third bolt hole to make it fit?? or maybe welded in a couple of pieces of flat bar and redrilled the hole to suit the HR bolt spacing??

Not sure on the HR boxes ability to fit and FB/EK column??
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

There is 2 bolt holes on the HR and 3 on the EK. I am not sure there is enough meat on the box to slot a hole and structuraly may be a fatal flaw!
I do not want to oval or slot the sub frame.

I'll see if I can do a search on the FE/FC forum tomorrow and find the post where this problem was discussed, maybe it might give you some info??

i've done it a few times and never had a problem bolted straight in, and the internals of the box are different

I can't remember exactly what put me off having Rares re-condition my steering box....... I am of the opinion that it was to do with the different ratio.
Something also comes to mind that the pitman arm did not centre when fitted to the different sector shaft - and there was less lock either left or right..... can't remember.....

I will have to get it done one day - and was ready to go with the Rares replacement until one of the Vic CC members told me of his issues.....

One inch closer to the dash would probably be a blessing for some of our larger people.... there's room for thought (excuse pun)......
