FB and other paintings

Post by Alastair Saxton »

At the end of 1988 I had finished my basic arts course (before specialising in Graphic Design) and did the first painting of a car. I did it to thank my Dad for the course he had sent me on. We took the FB out down to the bottom of the road and took some photos. I painted from those photos.
I enjoyed painting so much that over the next years have done about one a year with the exception of recent years. I always work off photos because I want a high degree of accuracy and detail. For example on the wrecked 60 IMPALA convertible I sketched some of the detail that was not clear in the photo, from a workshop manual.
Little bits of detail I enjoy are things that you don't really notice until you start looking really closely at the photo to paint from. On the 59 Buick you can see that the left back window is wound down a fraction. On the 58 Chevy, the bulb's fillament is still intact. On the 58 Caddy tail you can read the wording "Guide" , who are the company who make the lenses.
Some of the cars painted are Australian, from when I visited Canberra Street rod nationals. Others are from my travels around South Africa.
I use acrylic on board. 99% is brushed with a few bits airbrushed here and there. The tails of the 60 Caddy and the 57 Chevy have a bit more airbrushing on them.
Alastair
I'll start with the FB and the rest can follow.

Alastair they are awesome! I had trouble picking some of them as paintings 8) 8)

I wish I could do that, it must be so rewarding to be able to produce artwork like you and Scotty do.

I only just read the news on your father...... Our deepest condolences to you and your family.

Incredible eye for detail Alastair - personally I do my best work with a roller
When you're faced with an unpleasant task that you really don't want to do, sometimes you just have to dig deep down inside and somehow find the patience to wait for someone else to do it for you.

Absolutely gorgeous artwork Alastair.
Your talent is limitless. I wish I had the time & ability to complete a finished piece of fine art like that..but I just bodge my way through the rubbish you see here on the forum.
I enrolled in a graphic design course in 1978 & passed the entrance exam..but could'nt afford the price of the course, plus my Dad wanted me to do a trade & do a REAL job..not some 'arty farty excuse for work' (his words)
We've just had a big city design teacher move down here & open a private collage for Graphic Design in our town. I did have the whimsical thought to enroll  ..but I'd be 52 when I finished the course and who'd hire a bloke that old!
Maybe next lifetime I'll get it right

Unbelievable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You sure are one of the lucky ones with a gift like that Alastair. How about some pics of your cars over there as well with backdrops we are not familiar with in OZ?

Then post more of your incredible artwork of course !!!

No, no web site , just a house full of paintings. The 57 was the last painting I did, so it's been a few years gap. All the others were roughly done one per year. I better do another before I forget which end of the brush to hold!
Thanks for the compliment.

Hey Alistair, they are fantastic! Just wondering, do you sell any pieces? I really dig the Pontiac/Chev pile-up near the bottom...what would you sell for (if at all??)
Cheers, Scott
