Timing gear?? Anyone?

Just seeing if anyone has any timing gear 138 for sale? Or someone that sells it for a good price. Pref not the ole fibre one but if its a good price would be keen. cheers

hey nate,

thats what Im hunting for at the moment as well!

Any reason you dont want the Fibre version?

I've heard that the Alloy one's are real noisy - give off a whining sound. Not a good look for a stock motor (if thats what your going for?)

So yeah, there are a few (fibre) on ebay at the moment - as well as American Autos for $132 ...

The alloy ones, if you can still get them, had a habit of separating between the mounting boss which was steel and the aluminium gear.
Fibre ones i wouldn't give two bob for.
Steel timing gear sets are available from Master Engineering in Adelaide which contain timing gear, retainer, crankshaft gear and oil seal.
I have fitted quite a few and have had them range from very quiet to a little noisy. The noisy ones quieten down after a while and give no further trouble as long as the oil lubricating pipe is clean and the bleed hole is not blocked.
I would recommend steel timing gears as there is one less thing to worry about as far as grey motors breaking down is concerned.

hhhhmmmmm .....

now you got me second guessing myself Bill :?

I was basing my info on x2 mechanics (supposed 'grey motor experts') I know who both "would not go near the alloy ones" .... but I hear what your saying Bill / and point taken.

Although they did say - that the fibre ones "should be good for at least 10 years before you need to replace them". And yes, they both did agree that the Alloy ones would definately outlast the fibre ones.

So seems like there are pro's and con's that need to be weighed up:

**** Fibre - no noise / ~10yr life span.

**** Steel/Alloy - noisier / greater lifer span.

For me, Im looking for that dead-stock look and sound (quiet). Also, I suspect that if I can get close enough to 10 years outta it, then I'd be happy with that. I would assume I'll have something to do to my engine at that point, which time I might fit another. Based on that, Im leaning towards the Fibre version - at this moment anyway! :wink:

It's your call Jamie but i wouldn't go near fibre or alloy gears, one of the Vic members had a brand new fibre one fitted after a rebuild and it didn't last long at all before shiting itself on the open road.
I wouldn't be concerned about fitting a steel gear set as you wouldn't pick the noise (if any) at all. I just like the idea of not having the question in the back of my mind of when the fibre gear is going to give up the ghost.

I hear ya Bill - "you wouldn't pick the noise".

Thats also a concern to hear that someone's NEW fibre gear shat itself!

I may have to have a second chat with my mechanic before he goes ahead - job isnt scheduled to be done for another week or so, so have a bit of time to make a final decision.

I have always used alloy timing gear in all my cars,with no problems,the fibre ones dont seem to last,it boils down 2 how reliable you wont your motor 2 b. :)

Alloy timing gears seem to be OK for red motors but shit themselves in greys, i suspect it has something to do with solid lifters in grey engines putting stresses on the gears and not having a dampening effect as hydraulic lifters in red motors.
Just my thoughts.
I have only made one mistake in life, thought i was wrong but i wasn't. :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Just been watching the video Stewart posted of the Bendigo Nationals. The very last part says it all about why you shouldn't run a fibre timing gear. "out in the middle of nowhere, freezing cold, nothing around except a broken down FB"

thing was the fibre timing gear was fine...the crank? gear had a worn key hole...the fibre gear which was put in 6 year ago still looks as good as new... :shock: :D

Hey reidy , where are the steel gears available and what are they worth ???
