With the utes prodigious drinking problem starting to become a concern - 11 litres of oil in a 1000km trip to Albany and back ImageImage, the Holden Hospital decided it was time to start looking for a donor heart for the poor old girl.

Admission time …..

This particular donor heart came from me old mate Micks car - he was told it was terminal due to too much end float in the crank even though it ran OK - he ended up getting another donk reconditioned and mothballed this one Image

Onto the operating table you go old girl -

We started to inspect all her orifices , found a couple of areas of concern , a mild case of corrodius bungholius in the rear pots but nothing too concerning …..

Except for #6 which is an odd colour

Bores appear to be original ?

Don’t have a proper bore gauge/micrometer so this is the best I can manage - we ARE just a backyard surgery after all ImageImageImage

Then we measured the end float in the crank - hhhhmmmm ……..

Does seem excessive, however it was time for the doctors to repair to the think tank for a tall glass of adult cordial and some post operative discussion- the autopsy will conclude tomorrow

Scalpel.
Scalpel.
Retractors.

Bushchook.
Bushchook???

That end float appears terminal Doctor. A donor crank from some unfortunate soul may help. We could always get the lanterns, shovels and hessian bags out and visit the cemetery after dark...

Cheers,
Harv

I have managed to offload the marinised grey motor gear but the bloke doesn’t want the short block that comes with it - this will be the donor for a cam core, lifters , oil pump etc that this motor is missing, will see how the crank is in that one if it’s required- it will be next on the slab

Blacky,

Not quite original bores - it's been been bored out to 3-1/16" + 0.040".

OK, so 0.007" end float on the crank. My Humpy wasn't much better than that. Maybe it'll come up better with new main bearings (?)

The markings on top of the pistons are quite cryptic Rob, just random letters - not sure what to make of them TBH

i am hoping it a worn bearing not a buggered crank

For some piston manufacturers, each letter represents a piston that is 0.1 thou bigger than the intended bore size. They are measured after machining, just before fitting. You then select a piston that matches the final machined bore size.

If the bore size is supposed to be 3 1/16 + 40 thou (3.1025"), then:
a piston stamped A is 3.1025" diameter
a piston stamped B is 3.1026" diameter
a piston stamped C is 3.1027" diameter
a piston stamped D is 3.1028" diameter
a piston stamped E is 3.1029" diameter
a piston stamped F is 3.1030" diameter
a piston stamped G is 3.1031" diameter
a piston stamped H is 3.1032" diameter
a piston stamped I is 3.1033" diameter
a piston stamped J is 3.1034" diameter
a piston stamped K is 3.1035" diameter
a piston stamped L is 3.1036" diameter
a piston stamped M is 3.1037" diameter
a piston stamped N is 3.1038" diameter
a piston stamped O is 3.1039" diameter
a piston stamped P is 3.1040" diameter
a piston stamped Q is 3.1041" diameter
a piston stamped R is 3.1042" diameter
a piston stamped S is 3.1043" diameter
a piston stamped T is 3.1044" diameter
a piston stamped U is 3.1045" diameter
a piston stamped V is 3.1046" diameter
a piston stamped W is 3.1047" diameter
a piston stamped X is 3.1048" diameter
a piston stamped Y is 3.1049" diameter
a piston stamped Z is 3.1050" diameter

Two letters stamped? No idea.

Cheers,
Harv

Yanked the main caps and big ends for a looksee today
Rear main looks new , all of them are .010
Image

The front one had a funny looking mark in the bearing but the crank looks fine

Crank seems OK - one side
