EJ gearbox overhaul
Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
This is what I sent back in 2018 to spring manufacturer, so I couldn't give diameter I guess:
The lock springs should measure 1 & 1/8 inch free length and 23/32 inch under 8.5 to 10.5 lbs load.
The EJ is renowned for jumping out of 3rd gear at the best of times, I wonder if there is any value in having a little more tension than the original springs.
The detent balls are 9/32 inch diameter.
I would need 2 sets of ball and springs, one for 2nd third gear yoke, and one for first and reverse yoke.

Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
Where do they sit ? I have a EJ box here that is missing the sidecover, if the bits you need are in the box they are yours
When you're faced with an unpleasant task that you really don't want to do, sometimes you just have to dig deep down inside and somehow find the patience to wait for someone else to do it for you.

Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
Thanks for the offer Blacky, it's the side cover I'm working on though, these are the springs that sit in the shifter yokes, was wanting to put new ones in to get rid of slop, probably all the old ones in boxes have lost their tension unfortunately.

Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
you could drop a washer or two on top of the springs
Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
Vince,
I have a NOS, but quite festy, 7431970 1st-reverse yoke and shift shaft kit. It's for the "collarless" 1st-reverse sliding gear. The detent spring (5/16" OD) is about the best preserved of all the parts.
So the detent springs also got changed in the mid-EH revision of everything gearbox-related? I gather, then, that the EJ shifter yokes will only take the 1/4" OD detent springs?
One option is to go to a machine shop and get them to drill the bores in the yokes out to 5/16"-plus-a-little-bit, so the EH-onwards detent springs will fit.

Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
I could experiment with washers, these new springs would have perfect tension if they fit though, grrr.
The side cover, and shifter levers appart from the little internal lever are all new old stock so they are great.
I checked Rob's suggestions, the shiftrr shafts look great, the new ball ball bearings move freely in tracks and fit well, move though yokes fine too.
Might be off the mark here, as I have been known to make some bad decisions at times, but could the yoke bores be widened by 1/16 inch for the springs, or would I create further issues with that, maybe that causes issues with the ball bearing. Anyone want to hazard a guess on that?

Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
That's bizzare Rob, both had the same idea. I didn't see your response until I posted, lol. I like the idea of boring it out 1/16, logically the ball is a loose fit so shouldn't be effected.
Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
Vince,
Just confirm something for me. The detent spring drops into the yoke from the "inside", that is, the side where the ball is, which will be drilled to the OD of the ball . . . so won't a 5/16" OD spring slip into the bore? Or does the bore narrow down from 11/32" for the ball to just over 1/4" for the EJ detent spring?

Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
Yeah, the spring drops from the inside then you drop the ball on top. The ball is 9/32 if it is what I ordered which fits, so the 5/16 spring is just slightly to big to fit I guess. Bore seems same all the way down.
Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
This yoke came with the new old stock bits I bought, going by part number is from a later model not sure what, that also is 1/4 inch bore. Not sure if that will work with EJ box so might skip using that I think.

Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
Having said that looking at the 2 together, this highlights an issue. See the wear on the old one, when I sit it on the hub there is so much movement, compared to the newer one.

Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
Vince,
There's your problem there . . .
Your "other yoke" looks like the groove is worn out too.
Fractions of an inch: The detent ball in my 7431970 kit is 11/32" diameter. Your yokes take a 9/32" ball, which is less than 5/16". Drilling the bore out to take the bigger spring is a no-go.
You need a master parts catalog.
Clay, if you're watching this thread, can you post up some part numbers: EJ-early EH and late EH-HK shifter yokes, springs, balls and shift shafts. I'm beginning to think that the later parts are not interchangeable with the early parts.

Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
Found. One EJ gearbox case and side cover. Shifter lever bore in the side cover somewhat worn. Shifter yokes look waaay better than yours. I'm happy to part with the side cover assembly, complete.
(This'll be the one that I picked up from a house down the street during a council clean-up in the early 80s. The top gear synchro cone had been chewed up, so most of the internals were useless.)

Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
Rob, I am thinking I need to stick with the 1/4 bore, and the old springs are not the issue, the yoke is. The new one I was thinking had no signs of wear and was a snug fit on hub. See this other photo of the flip side which is a much better design as is a better fit to the other yoke.

Re: EJ gearbox overhaul
That would be awesome Rob if I could have that side cover, just let me know how much you want including postage, and I can transfer the money, thank you
