Boot Hinges

Post by Rev Tex »

Hi,

I finally tracked down some replacement boot hinges. The driver's side one is in pretty good shape - doesn't have too much play in the pivot points. Having just cleaned it up with molasses followed by paint thinners, I was getting ready to hit it with some phosphoric acid and then paint it. Before I did I test fit the hole against the adjustable spring tensioner post and now I'm worried the hole is oversized. The spring post is half an inch in diameter. I measure the hole at about 16mm (5/8 inch) in diameter. Does that sound right?

The hole seems quite round and unworn - unlike the passenger side one which is quite elongated and both pivots have a lot of slop and play in them.

Cheers,
Iain

I have had a pair of complete hinge assemblys, springs and posts, still attached to the parcel shelf supports, advertised on gumtree for two years with no bites. $40 per side doesn’t seem unreasonable to me, yet no takers.

I might take your passenger side hinge - I'm new to Gumtree but I'll try and send you a message. I just can't remember how worn mine was when I put the adjustable tensioner in.

Three years it’s been on there. Just want to see it used really.

On my passenger side one the top hole, the one in the tab welded to the hinge itself, appears elongated. Not sure if this is an issue, or meant to be.Image

A guy in Tassie bought the boot springs. The pins and mounts went to scrap. Pins were nearly worn through as it turned out. Good result.

Thanks Clay - I don't think there's meant to be any serious amount of play in the pivot points. As it turned out my passenger side one is really quite good without too much play. After cleaning it up and painting it, I think it'll do fine.

As it turned out I needed the driver's side, and the spare I already have has far too much play in the pivots points, as well as the elongated hole.

I reckon between both sets I'll be able to salvage a decent driver's side unit. Once that's sorted I'll finally put the driver's side adjustable spring tensor on the car.

Thanks again for all your help.

Cheers,
Iain

I can't believe it took nearly a year to get around to fixing this. To fix the elongated and worn holes I made some blanking pieces and had a friend braze them it, before redrilling the holes. To reconnect the linkage I made a rivet out of a bolt that was heat treated before fixing it with a pein hammer. It seems to be working pretty well so I'll paint and install shortly.
