Re: Ammo's Ute

Post by Wrongway Roger »

I may be changing directions with the diff in the Ute as the availability of wheels to suit the early holden stud pattern are limited.
Although Ammo and I have selected the same wheel, it is a compromise but it should suit.
Also, the options on size are limited.

So, I purchased a VN diff with the view to shortening to suit and then grabbing the drop stub axles and hubs that I have for the sedan to give me an all-round commodore stud pattern.

This give a better range of wheels to choose from. A couple of potential options

Hey Rog they are a good diff and pretty easy to shorten to match the rims you want to use and as you say you get a far bigger range of rims to choose from.

Ammo and I picked the top photo, with the grey centre in 15" x 7.
As the ute is Amoo's ride the steering needs to be lighter so she can drive it.
There is a EK sedan in Adelaide with the " salt " wheels which I like.
.
These are wheels I purchase way back, that fill the wheel arch nicely and are Commodore pattern, 16 x 7 with 225/ 50 tyre.
There is little wiggle room inside the wheel arch so either reduce tyre size or do the slice and dice to the wheel tub.

Using these wheel my diff needs to be 1425mm. So I think I will select the wheels then narrow the VN diff to suit.

I pulled the drop axles and brake calipers from the sedan, grit blasted and primed.
Purchase new bearings and seals and will fit these better brakes to the ute.
Moving forward but at what seems to be a snails pace.

Cheers,
Roger

Hey Rog really like the way the wheels fill the arch and yes I agree as I said above better to select rims and narrow to them just really important that you get the pinion in the centre of the tunnel too, but I’m sure you are all over it looking forward to seeing the outcome.

Thanks for the reminder on the tunnel.
I did find a thread on this forum VN Diff Shortening by Ben, that I found useful.
Quick measure of the old EK diff, it is off centre by 38 mm and as I will likely be cutting both side I will ensure it is centred.

Sprayed the calipers silver so they look newish. No thought given to red or yellow.
I also want to retain the hand brake set up I made so a couple of clevis type brackets should work.

Cheers,
Roger

This photo may helpImageThe arrow marks centreline of chassis rails. You can see the tunnel at rear is offset about 20mm to driver side. If the pinion were centred to the arrow it wouldn't appear to cause a clash unless you run a very fat tailshaft.

5.5"x16" & 7"x16" both -12 offset, 175/60/16 & 215/60/16.
Damn just remembered they are Chev/HQ stud pattern, but i'll put em up in case others might be interested.
White walls might be a bit fancy for a ute.
A place for everything and everything in it's place, just can't remember where that place is.

Thanks Bridy for the offer as they would cool on the ute but Ammo not so keen.
Have now tidied up the front calipers with the 2" drop spindles, it will be Commodore pattern now.

I will be speak to the wheels guys tomorrow about the these.

I know not everyone will like or approve but Ammo and I do.
Hoping for 15 x 6" for the front and 16x7" for the rear
Cheers,
Roger

you are the only ones that matter
i think they look great
make sure you tripple check they will fit with the drop stubs, in my experience you don't have a lot of clearance once they're lowered that's why i'm stuck with stock HG steel wheels (and i had to cut the inner lip out of the guard wheel arch with them) but i do have drop stubs and 2" lowered coils aswell
