FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT
FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT
Has anyone used an early Falcon fuel tank ie. XT/XR or XW/XY for the bigger capacity and spare wheel well??? Do you have any pics??

Re: FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT
EK Wazza,
I've done the XB tank but its a very tight fit and needed quite a bit of work to get in.
I believe the rage at the moment is mustang 64-66 as they are compact and fit the rails easily.

Re: FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT
Hi Wazza, don’t know about the tanks you mentioned, but a mate’s put a early Mustang, like Greg’s said, in his EK Sedan build. He only lives a km away, and can get pic’s if you want, as long as the car’s not still at the painters.
He got it from Custom Mustangs in Victoria, about $270 new, plus freight from memory.

Re: FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT
Bought a couple of early &*#@ fuel tanks to play around with I think XW and XY. Anyone have any pics of the conversion?????

If you open the photo up in a new tab the photo bucket logo disappears, mines a XB tank.

I am currently fitting a Mustang 16gallon / 60 litre tank to my wagon.
A dummy fit if it looks really good.

The Mustang tank appears to be a nice fit between the rails.... What diff will you be using?FbSTDwagon wrote: ↑Sun Jan 24, 2021 11:21 pm I am currently fitting a Mustang 16gallon / 60 litre tank to my wagon.

I was looking at VSB14 and noticed the ruling on the fuel tanks as in position and guess what had to move it all
The rules say that the tank cannot be lower than the plane from the rear tyre grounded to the permanent rear bodywork.
Missed by 50mm!!!
So the tank had to be swapped around, real easy not. I had to cut the entire frame out, relieve the rear boot rail and make up some new frames.
Greg, when you originally installed the XB tank was it hanging lower than quarter panel ?
Re: FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT
Some reading from VSB 14....
2 FUEL TANKS (Other than LP Gas/NG Containers)
Fuel system modifications, replacement fuel tanks and drop tanks must meet the following
requirements:
The vehicle must have a minimum ground clearance of 100mm and meet the minimum
ground clearance requirements as defined in ADR 43;
No part of any fuel tank or fuel system component must lie below a plane created as a
component of that vehicle’s Departure Angle1
;
Any fuel tank or fuel system component must be at least 100mm inboard of the OEM
permanent body work (excluding the filler neck and assembly);
Any fuel tank or fuel system component with a ground clearance of 200mm or less
must be adequately protected by shields or adjacent vehicle components;
In the event of any tyre being deflated, no parts of the fuel tank or fuel system must
contact the road surface;
If a replacement tank of a 125% or larger capacity than the original uses the original
mountings, their strength must be checked and shown to be adequate by a Signatory;
Replacement fuel tanks must not adversely affect the suspension travel, controllability,
handling or road holding of the vehicle;
The fuel filler inlet and cap should be located outside of the vehicle. Where an inlet is
located inside a vehicle, it must not be inside the passenger compartment and the inlet
must be separately sealed from the rest of the vehicle to ensure fumes do not enter the
passenger cabin and that provisions are made to ensure any fuel spills are localized
and drain outside the vehicle;
The fuel tank and filler shall be so arranged that any overflow or leakage of fuel cannot
accumulate nor contact the exhaust or electrical systems; and
Any apertures created to allow for the installation of the fuel tanks must be suitably
sealed to prevent the entry of exhaust, road or petrol fumes into the cabin of the
vehicle.

Re: FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT
Yes it was, I had it back to front because of diff clearance but it hung lower than the rear 1/4 panel by 50mm right at the back, not much but would hit the ground before the rest of the car in a steep dip/departure angle situation. This means no rego due to VSB14 regulation, so I swapped it around. It does explain the shape of the tank as well !oz_ek wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 4:49 pmEK283 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 5:59 pm http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtop ... &start=255

Re: FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT
Build it to comply and look stock. When you take to identity check they won’t look at stuff like that. You’re not doing any other significant mods but if you end up going over the pits I doubt they will ask for engineering certification in SA.

Re: FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT
The stainless tank I got from Marty Dean passes... just. Hard to eyeball it, so I took a length of string and reversed over it. With the string jammed under the rear wheel, pull the loose end up until it is on the beaver panel. Then take a look sideways to see if the tank is lower than the string.
The NCOP “no fuel tank outside the bodywork” rule stops you from running a Moon tank too. I had hoped to tuck mine (full-bogan LPG bottle conversion with AN fittings and internal splash plate) in by cutting the grille, but the engineer was not keen on any fuel tank in front of the driver.
Cheers,
Harv

Re: FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT
I've used the VN VP commodore tank on both my FC and EK which is pretty similar to the mustang tanks in depth etc with no issues.

Yeah I have also used VN tank in a sedan , is a good fit and ideal if you are going fuel injected.
