Windscreen replacement - mastic or no mastic?
Windscreen replacement - mastic or no mastic?
Hi guys. I have new rubbers for my EK front and back glass. I have had someone suggest there is no need to apply a sealant/mastic as it is too messy and unnecessary as new rubbers whould seal just fine. I would be keen to hear other's thoughts.
Thanks, Chris.
Thanks, Chris.

Selleys butyl mastic available at Bunnings. Turps cleanup. Non setting. Mainly just between body and rubber. It isn’t that messy. I like the grey as it looks like the original GMH windscreen sealant which is no longer available.

Re: Windscreen replacement - mastic or no mastic?
Don’t be fooled by the fact they don’t use any sealant in their clip. I have successfully done front and rear sedan screens at home. Get yourself a length of nylon curtain or sash cord matching diameter to the gap in the seal. Some tape to hold the rubber and trim in place on the screen. Rubber mallet. A helpful friend if you can. I did both mine solo, wasn’t that hard, seals were ten year old Rare Spares ones.
There seems to be a problem with the Rare Spates seals current batch not fitting at the bottom corners on the front screens lately. I believe this is being rectified but if you search on here you will find people have been very happy with seals purchased from I think Old Auto Rubber Co.
Good luck.
Cheers

Re: Windscreen replacement - mastic or no mastic?
Great advice thanks Clay. I bought the seals about 4 years ago (when I thought I could restore the vehicle quickly), very naive indeed. Biggest problem has been almost with painters. First got started on panels nearly 6 months after he said he would start, just did the panels, not the body and did a cr@p job on them. I took the panels back after 12 months, paid him more than they were worth and then wited another 12 months to get someone else. Up side is the new guys is fantastic and nearly finished. He had to redo the panels the first guy had his apprentice have a go at !!! Familiar story I undertsand hearing from others.
Cheers, Chris.

Sounds familiar Chris. I decided to do my own painting but it is the prep mate, the prep. It goes on and on if you want a half decent job that will last.

Re: Windscreen replacement - mastic or no mastic?
Hey mate I have always used Wurth dab of window sealer.. it is great stuff, you can make as much mess with it as you want and then roll up a ball of itself and dab up any excess with it. It is actually quite fun to use bit more expensive but makes the whole experience way better

Re: Windscreen replacement - mastic or no mastic?
Rares apparently have new stock of the front seals that should be better but have not seen one fitted as yet - just an FYI
You will find me lost somewhere!
Re: Windscreen replacement - mastic or no mastic?
Fcwrangler on the FE FC forum advised Rare Spares have now resolved the FB EK front screen rubber issue. Think he is a windscreen fitter so should know.

Re: Windscreen replacement - mastic or no mastic?
I spoke to Dave Ryan from Rares about the windscreen rubbers about a month back. They were still up in the air at that stage. Have flicked him a message to see if we can get an official update.
