Height of Standard HR Front Springs

Dear Learned Forum members I know there has been some discussion on standard height HR spring previously however I have pulled one the lowered Pedders springs from my front end and measured it at 270mm.

I rang King springs this morning and spoke to their tech guy who tells me their lowered spring is 245mm and their standard height spring is 270mm which is the height of the lowered spring I already have.

I have got a pair of springs from Classic Olden (old holden wreckers here in WA) they are 370mm high 9 coils, coils are the same dia etc etc.

Can anybody tell me please what the uncompressed height is of an HR front spring or measure one if anybody has one out of a front end; this would be a great help to me and greatly appreciated.
Regards
Neil

ImagePicture worth a thousand words as they say. This is s king spring I was told is standard height. The coil gauge is 11.5mm.

I was able to measure gauge of a factory HR spring and also an FB spring both 9.5mm or 3/8” and nine coils. So above are obviously not standard.

I wasn’t able to measure uncompressed factory spring but from the Gregory’s FX - HR manual:Image
HR factory should be 311mm uncompressed and 187mm compressed.

Hope this helps.
Cheers

Its going to be hard to nail down as compression of a spring is hard to measure without a correct machine. Also length may vary at extreme rates due to the material, coil count and of course the weight of the car.

Its going to be trial and error I think

Yes mate

I might try the king springs in the front of my ute for a comparison once the 186 is back in there.

A set of factory springs should give you a more comfy ride with the drop stubs doing the lowering work. I found the factory ones great with one coil chopped off in stock HR front on my 202 trimatic EK sedan.

Hi Clay just for info I went back to the old holden wreckers here and this time took a vernier and tape got a pair of springs the right length.

I measured the thickness of the standard springs in a complete HR front end that they had there and they came in at 14.5mm so the ones that I grabbed are the same as that.

I'll let you know how they go by rights they should pick me up that 40 to 50mm in the front that I need for tyre clearance.

Hi Neil
14.5mm? I’m going to recheck my measurements. Sounds heavy duty.
