Intermittent speedo problem

Post by Shaggy »

Hi,
I have a FB with a red motor and a trimatic. The speedo works for about half an hour of driving then just stops working. It happens more often than not. Does anyone have any ideas? I checked the speedo driven gear (23 teeth) inside the trans but it does not look that worn.

The square cross-section part of the cable at the gearbox end will most likely be rounded off. Or the similar problem in the speedo drive gear. Best way to troubleshoot is to disconnect the cable from the speedo, pull it out from under the dash and twist-tie the cable to the steering column, and then take the car for a drive. You should always see the inner cable turn when the car's in motion. Or you can try turning the cable inner when the car's at rest - the cable should "wind up" but not keep turning.
