Had a go at renovating the commutator per Robs instructionsImage
No dremel but.....Image cordless grinder to reface the pinion.

Degreased the winding body but wondering what this white silicone like material is. ImageImage it looks suspiciously like an attempt to patch up rooted insulation.

Clay,

The goop looks like a home patch-up job, all right. But it'll probably work fine.
Anyway, $20 for three starter motors is a good deal.

Clay I can't really see from the photos of the pinion but remember there is a lead in on the front edge of the gear not sure if you have put it back on when you dressed the gear teeth.

Ok it is turning over. It seems obvious compression is uneven. Tapper cover coming off to see if any valves are stuck.

145, 55! 152, 135? 300+!? 160.

I think number 5 still full of oil. Oiled up number 2 and it came up over 250.

Guess I’ll chuck on manifolds and see if it starts.

Looks like the fuel pump is next on the agenda. Found a couple lying around. Thought I had more. There are three on motors in the yard. One is a vacuum pump which I will need for the wipers what ever motor I go for so might see if i can get a kit for it.

Swapped in a fuel pump and dizzy from my old 186.

She runs! I pre-warned the neighbours as exhaust ends at what is left of the extractors.Image

Next item is to fill this hole so I can warm her up and tune.Image

Like my leads?Image I think the no 1 is off a grey.

Clay,

So how does the 186 idle? On six cylinders, I hope. Much blowby?
By the way, it looks like the distributor's a couple of teeth out. Number 1 ignition lead should be the one immediately CW from the vacuum advance unit.

. . . and just as a matter of curiosity, your lower thermostat housing has no hose outlets for the inlet manifold. What's the part number cast on the cylinder head - 7420081? Then it'd be a 179 head, and so it would be difficult to use an HR or later water-heated inlet manifold.
