Air Vent seal

Just wonder if the air vent (up under the dash) normally has a seal.

Mine looks like it was sealed up with selastic but I'm not sure if their was an original seal.

And if it does need one, what have others used to replace them ?

Finny,

Looks like someone followed the Plumbers Creed: "Do your best, and silastic the rest" .

The seal is handy, as the lid does not have much force behind it, and the leaking air can be chilly in winter (unless you have a Warmaride... then the passing water valve makes the air leak bloody hot in summer  ).

Rubber is OK in a pinch, but some heavy sponge-rubber (offcuts from Clarke rubber) glued in place seem to do a better job.

Cheers,
Harv.

Thanks Harv, so did it originally have a seal in this place or was it always just an afterthought.

The spring on mine is actually very strong and is held down quite strongly.
But it would still slow air past it especially at speed.

A quick flip through the 20yr parts book shows the seal as 7401688 and its pictured as the same rounded end shape as the plenum vent 'door'. Checking a couple of spares here found evidence of some very old spongy type foam. You might even find something at the hardware shop for sealing doors with self adhesive backing about 1/2" wide.

Dragging up an old post but need to know how the warmaride heater mounts.

So, I have the plenum flap and my heater has the rectangular flu bit. Does it just screw up below the above pictured flap ?

My heater also has the 2 brackets to mount it on the back of the dash.

Not sure if there is spacers between the plenum flap and the heater shroud or does it just screw up and compress the foam gasket ?

Thanks Greg

If it’s like this one Greg, uses the outer two plenum vent screws at top. Can’t remember how it bolts to dash but mine didn’t have anything in between when I ratted it from a mates car in 1988.Image
