Probably Just Another FB ??

Post by In the Shed »

G’Day Folks,

My name is Stephen and I have recently joined the forum and thought I should introduce myself and my car. I have a FB Special sedan. A bit about the wheels.

My father purchased the car in Dec 1962 from United Motors in Adelaide. I do not know how many miles it had covered but assume it was low given its age.

My father worked as a cabinet maker about a 5 minute walk from our house and as my mother never learnt to drive the car sat in the shed for most of its days. I recall as a kid helping my brother and sister pushing the car to get it started to go to church on Sunday as the battery had gone flat from lack of use!
My father has never thrown anything out and has every receipt he ever spent on the car. I have included a receipt for a service in 1970 for the outrageous sum of $4.00!!

In the mid 1970’s it had a short motor installed as a changeover and unfortunately lost its original engine number but retained the old grey motor. In the late 1970’s my father changed employment and the car was called on to commute to work (approx 10kms return a day). As with most family cars my brother, sister and finally I learnt to drive. In the early 1980’s dad offered the car to my brother but he was not going to be seen dead driving it, my sister also declined so I was last in line and said yep, I’ll take it. By now it had travelled 85 000 miles (avg of 3700 miles/yr). In 1983 the car was called on for an advert for the RAA magazine.

When I started as an apprentice in 1983 and drove it to trade school I copped heaps of shit as my class mates were all driving V8 Monaros, Chargers & Toranas. In 1990 I wanted something different so stored it for 5 years and drove a Celica. I then put it back on the road for a few more years. Since 2005 (155 000 miles) it has been put up on blocks as the demands of full time work, doing post graduate studies at Uni and having a new born child (she is now 5yrs old) meant it was not getting any road time. At present it is buried in the back of the shed (hence I have had to use a photo taken 16 yrs ago). Other projects are preventing it getting any daylight.

The car is all original with the following exceptions:
- Rear stabiliser bar.
- Hidden ignition kill switch
- Electric wipers (EK) with intermittent control (concealed)
- Electric clock above glove compartment
- Quart halogen headlights
- Rear window heater/demister
- Reupholstered seat tops (all vinyl trim is original except front arm rests)
- Inertia seat belts to the front.

I have had to conceal some details on the paper work as my parents are still around in the same address as shown on the purchase receipt. I see some recent discussion on insurance values. Up until recently I only had this car insured for a few thousand dollars but since poking around the internet I have come to the conclusion it is worth a wee bit more, not that its for sale. Whilst I have always loved the FB I have decided to “upgrade” to something more modern and decided to get my EK ute on the road over the next few months. My aim is have a tidy ute (not concourse) that I can actually use without the fear of it getting dirty or marking the tray. I hope these photos and info is of interest?

Regards
Stephen

Welcome mate :)
Great tale you have there!!

Hi Stephen, welcome to the forum. The FB/EK Nats are on at the moment, so please don't think you're being ignored if just a few of us reply.

Can't wait to see the pics - unfortunately not displaying on your post properly.

Hello Stephen, well done on being the kid that said yes to the FB - you probably saved it
There's a story under My FB/EK which details one man's quest to find and restore his grandfather's EK - have a read of The Rebuilding of Old Timer.
