Best way to Mt Gambier from Sydney via Ballarat

Looking for some local knowledge...
We will be coming down from Albury on the M31 and will be taking the kids to Ballarat to stirke it rich. Is it better to stay on the M31 and come via Melbourne on the M80 or cut across to Bendigo and come down via the A300?

Hi Stewart
This is how we generally do this the trip and it works for us as we do not go near Melbourne at all . An easy picturesque drive . Albury to Shepparton, Shepparton to Bendigo, Bendigo to Ballarat then Ballarat to Mount Gambier on the B160.
Hope this helps, but it is a personal choice.

Not long to go now...we are all looking forward to a top weekend.
Will plan to stop off at the choccy factory...I'm sure we will need supplies...
