Re: It's baack
What rack setup did you go with Mick ????
When you're faced with an unpleasant task that you really don't want to do, sometimes you just have to dig deep down inside and somehow find the patience to wait for someone else to do it for you.

Re: It's baack
bought an FB with it in it but it's a VC commodore manual steer rack rear mounted on a HR front, terrible turn ratio what would have taken 1/4 turn of the wheel with the original steering now takes half a turn of the wheel (these are approximates) (i know a bloke with an FJ that said his is the same and another bloke that did one for someone as a job that said the same thing) it still seems an improvement over the heavy wondery not direct steering that came out but the front mounts i've had have all had a good steering ratio

still gotta get around to some cleaning and tidying, but then again it's just the engine bay, but all done great improvement probably next job and one of the main reasons i took the grey out and went red will be an auto and more than likely 4 speed auto

Re: It's baack
things move slowly here especially when i send the rack to Sydney for a mate to give it a once over, booked in for Thursday but even with the alignment all over the place it still drives better than it did with steering box and draglink
if the guy doesn't seem confident in his late technology stuff there's a guy who is apparently great with older cars and has old equipment but an hour and a half away

Re: It's baack
Any recommendations for an early-Holden wheel alignment in Sydney? Getting closer with the wagon, and dread to think how far it is out.

Harv,
I used to get mine done at Burt Bros Fairfield, they were good in regards to all equipment and data.

Harv,
I can show you how to do front wheel alignments at home. Particularly if you've got one of these funky LCD spirit levels. Your carport floor's level enough.

Re: It's baack
Damn... I get all my brake stuff there, but would never have thought that they did front end alignments. They have been in business a loooong time... Dad got all his brake stuff there in the 70's.
This is a skill I would dearly like to have, and thankyou for the offer. Once things settle down at home, I would really like to learn this. The back end of the carport is level... but the front has a good slope. Makes pushing children's cars out of the way a chore .

Re: It's baack
just went to Yamba for the weekend this thing now takes bumps better than my VY SS ute, steers great even though it still needs a proper wheel align steering is super light and direct though not a great steering lock (no great concern i don't spend to much time in car parks or doing U turns) and you need to turn the steering wheel more turns for same result, at slow speeds can effortlessly steer one handed
formula for a nice steering and ride while still having a low car
2" drop stubs on HR front end 2" lowered springs rear mounted rack and pinion (though the front mounts i've had have had better steering)
3.5" reset rear leaves, EH diff housing with LC/LJ torana bump stops (remove the factory EK/FB ones)

Re: It's baack
Mick, are the Torana bumps better than eh?
Probably just as well you don’t have much lock with 4” lowered front.
I don’t suppose the Pacific Hwy has got smoother since l drove my EK 215 through Coffs in ‘89.

Re: It's baack
torana bump stops are just much shorter maybe only an inch or so high
nah had full lock with stock steering though i had to cut some of the lip out of the front guards
Pacific HWY is now brilliant 2 lanes 100/110kmh (not fantastic through coffs as it's the only city/town they are still only talking about by passing all besides Coolongolook which is still 2 lanes and 80kmh from Heatherbrae) and past Coffs is brilliant 2 lanes 110kmh till about 15ks out of Grafton, but they are well on their way with the highway past there aswell
