Believe it or not Dettol!!!! 1 part water/1 part Dettol. Submerge it for 24 hours, use a toothbrush to remove flakes. Submerge for another 24 hours and repeat toothbrush. Then get a small pin/tack and remove the small fragments in the crevices. Bit fiddly but I enjoyed it!

Oh and use gloves with dettol otherwise your hands will stink!

Couple of other hints:
Dettol can only be used to remove acrylic not enamel paint.
Once you've stripped it try to remove as many scratches as possible on both sides. Start with Mr Sheen, then use cut and polish for deeper scratches and finally a buffer to remove deepest.
When painting make sure you thoroughly remove/clean any excess paint from where it shouldn't be otherwise it will come through. I thought I removed excess enamel but didn't do it well enough and so had to strip again (with brake fluid). I only use acrylic now.
Hardest place to paint is the ring (silver or gold depending on the type you have) so make sure you have a very thin brush for that area.
I put 3 coats on mine.
Will post a picture when it's finished.

I was thinking of using silver or gold leaf just to see how it goes.

It might turn out really trick,I'll take some shots when I do it just for fun.
