Hi Clay, I reckon you are using the wrong gasket. Get an extractor gasket from Rares. Very thick composite and can handle the variation between manifolds well. Highly recomend them. I have a set of solid steel manifold washers (I think from ebay). You can put a bit of pressure on them! - but I really think the gasket is the problem here.

Thanks for the tip Brett. I do have the correct washer in there now. It was pretty obvious that the smaller one wasn't clamping on the exhaust manifold at all. If it recurs I will chase up the extractor gasket.

The different heights/thicknesses of the two manifolds don’t help the washers. I use the bench grinder to step one side until the washer sits flat… then tighten well.

RAG but it works.

I levelled the intake to match the headers prior to installation. The main issue is the curvature on the 1-2 and 5-6 intake runners, which requires clearencing the washers. The gasket I used was recommended as the one all the HQ racers were using, but both offered were the composite type.

A few photos of what is working for me. Fortunately using Holden headers and intake manifold means everything is pretty level. However, the solid metal washers I have used allow you to take cuts off to level if need be. Photos of Rares gasket that works well and Permatex extractor gasket with metal covers. My own preference is for the soft sided Rares ones.

Went for a drive and still some noise I think. I also heard it ping, up a hill at 2000rpm in top at 3/4 throttle. I'll have to investigate the gasket and will certainly look at the rares ones thanks Brett.

Everything is pinging ATM mate.. Jason took 5 degrees out of his and I’ve taken 6 out of mine and still slight ping full moonbarometric pressure or something young fella with hot 6 at coffee and chrome the other night had same problem… I stuck 5 litres of race fuel in and still pinging.. I was thinking carbon buildup in combustion chamber as my daughter has been driving it on her L plates so hasn’t been flogged but strange that it happened to a lot of people.. love some ideas bin this?

Just resurrecting the old 13" chromies.ImageFront 195/80 R13 are nearly as tall as the 195/75 R14 they are replacingImageThe rears are 235/60 R13, Nankangs all round. A bit shorter than the 235/60 R14sImage
The fronts don't seem to rub at all, and the rears maybe just on the inside occasionally.ImageImage

Thanks, that would be good Brett.

Centre fuel bowl was weeping seriously. Float height was high so I shimmed the valve seat and the issue ceased.
