New brakes locked on

Post by Errol62 »

A club member contacted me today about this, so scrolled back about 10 years with no luck finding another occurrence on here.

His mechanic overhauled the brakes, including new linings. He drove the car home and parked it in the shed, in gear , handbrake on, as you do. 2 weeks later went to drive the car, lo an behold, rear bakes seized.

Speculating that the lovely fresh surfaces on the drums and linings have stuck, and just need a shock. But how best to do do without causing any damage? I'm sure this is not uncommon.

Speak o Oracle, I implore you.

Jack up car
Place on axle stands
Remove rear wheels
Belt around circumference of drum with gympie
Start car , place in gear and drop clutch
At least one should free up , give the other one a few more quilts with the gympie then refit wheels and try the clutch dump trick again.
Once free take back to mechanic with a medium sized pineapple and some lube.
When you're faced with an unpleasant task that you really don't want to do, sometimes you just have to dig deep down inside and somehow find the patience to wait for someone else to do it for you.

Option 2:

Jack up car
Place on axle stands
Remove rear wheels
Heat circumference of drum with MAP gas torch
Start engine, engage reverse, let clutch out
If no joy, apply more heat until the brakes begin to free up
Don leather gloves and remove smoking-hot brake drums
Re-adjust brakes
(gift for mechanic as suggested above)
