Linear conversions are all based on 1” (imperial, not US) = 25.400000000000000000000000000000000000000mm.

Exactly. And yes, there is such a thing as a US foot.

If you wanna get really funky, centimeters are also used to measure capacitance. 1cm = 0.000000000001113 farads.

Now where did I put that tinfoil hat.... :egeek:

The tinfoil hat is sitting on a shelf in my lab, right next to the replica flux capacitor. Speaking of which, the self-capacitance of a 1-cm radius sphere is about a picofarad. Now, let me count the leading zeroes. Yep. Eleven.

OK, then. It's a quirk of the centimetre-gram-second system of units that the permittivity of free space is defined as unity. The parallel-plate capacitance formula then reduces to C = area/separation, which has the dimensions of (cm x cm)/cm, thus capacitance is expressed in centimetres.
