Collapsable Steering Column for V6 Conversion - How I Did It

Post by fbidek »

I am slowly working my way through a FB V6 conversion project. This site has been a great resource for information and ideas.
One area that had troubled for a while was fabricating a collapsable steering column.
I gathered the parts and with some hand tools and a welder was able to fabricate my column.
The following 3 pages is the information on how I tackled the task (with the help of some ideas from the forum members).

Next is to fabricate the bottom mount, but want to sort out the brake pedal to made sure I dont paint myself into a corner.

Hope this is able to help others and if nothing else it's always interesting to see how others are tackling various aspects of their projects.

No, going with a Lokar floor shifter for the T700R4.
Would have liked a column shift setup but the floor shift seemed easier.

bumper this cable shift was obviously setup in the cab. Not the engine bay. Is that correct

Brett isn’t on here too often these days Sam. Photos do suggest the action happens under the dash rather than in the engine bay.

Correct Belly, the cable ran along the firewall on the inside then through the side of the tunnel and out to the gearbox

Thanks Blacky and Errol62 . I have a mate doing a collapsible auto column for me that will allow me to run the original column on my commodore gearbox like this one. I was interested to see how it is done. I like the idea of running it inside to de clutter the engine bay.

Yeah me too - I am running my speedo cable a similar way using a HQ style speedo cable grommet to keep it out of the engine bay 👍
