Adjustable boot spring pins

Post by anotherfbnewbie »

Hi all,
I installed a missing boot spring in the FB and it just doesn't look right.

Whole hinge assembly was very sloppy before installing the spring and i think it's worn out.

There's a fellow on the FE FC forum who is selling replacement pins that are adjustable, but i have had feedback from another FB owner that they are too short for FB.

Just wondering if anyone else has fitted them and do they work ok?

Thanks in advance.

RET on both this forum (rarely) and the FE/FC Forum (mostly) has been making these for years, probably best to send him a PM and get the info straight from the source.
When you're faced with an unpleasant task that you really don't want to do, sometimes you just have to dig deep down inside and somehow find the patience to wait for someone else to do it for you.

Thanks mate, yes we have been communicating via messenger.

RET says they are fine, but feedback from another FB owner says not so.

That's why i was wondering if anyone else has fitted them to their FB.

I'll probably just order them anyhow, it's only $60 bucks, but then again, that's a box of beer

I've fitted a set of the adjustable boot hinge spring pivots to my FC, and they work well.

But -

All your component parts need to be unworn and undistorted, or repaired to as-new condition.

Removing the broken remains of the original pivot is painful. I can amend RET's instruction sheet as follows -

Removal:

1. Remove boot lid. Remove boot mat. Drain and remove fuel tank. (It's a lot easier to sit in the boot with your feet on the ground than assume fetal position inside the boot.) Remove spare wheel clamp assembly (passenger's side only).
2. Lift boot hinge pin retaining tab with screwdriver, remove hinge pin and boot hinge assembly.
3. Mark and centre-punch the centre of the spring pin from the other side of the support bracket. Drill a pilot hole at least 5/16" deep. Enlarge pilot hole with a 1/2" drill so that the outside of the 1/2" hole is 1/16" deep.
4. With a hacksaw, cut through the hinge spring post flush with the support panel. Dress the rear face flush with a file.
5. Using a 1/2" diameter round file, enlarge the 1/2" hole just enough to admit the adjustable hinge spring pin. Or use a 14 mm step drill.

These adjustable boot spring tensioners are the best. The old posts on my EK needed to be drilled and ground out (they definitely weren't press fit). But the result was excellent - after manufacturing a spring installation tool and cutting my hand open a couple of times, there is not doubt that the adjustable tensioners are the way to go. Really grateful to the forum and RET for finally being able to get rid of the sawn down broomstick.
