Zenith 30iz Twin Carbies on Grey Motor

Post by FbSTDwagon »

I have the opportunity to buy this twin carby set up for the grey motor.

Traditionally i understand these carbies have come off a Torana 1100cc 4 cylinder motor.

I was hoping to find a set of twin strommies for a bit of extra ‘performance’ on the grey motor but they are proving hard to find... (has anyone got a pair for sale?)

Does anyone know how these zenith carbies rock and roll on the grey motor?

I am guessing 2 carbies off an 1100cc motor will be good for a total of 2200cc’s so I concerned that I won’t be able to squeeze any extra power out of them in a performance application.

Any feedback appreciated. Thanks
Drew

The Zenith 30IZ carbs are unusual. They are a UK-made carb, and were used on the HB Torrie. The Torrie also got the Solex B30PSEI-6, which is very, very similar but not identical. The Brabham Torries also got the CD-Strommy.

The 30IZ/B30PSEI-6 are not too common. Other than the HB Torrie, a few Bedfords got them (not many - HAV/HAE Handivans, A2 utes and A3 trucks) and that's about it in Australia. The sister carbs PSEI-S1 were used in Triumph Heralds and Vauxhall Vivas, whilst the PSEI-2 and PSEI-3's got used in (relatively few) Anglias and Naughty Corties.

There is probably a sad Torrie out there that would desperately love those carbs.

I can't find venturi sizes for these carbs, but suspect that you are correct and that they are undersized for a grey. The twin manifold will help with flow and fuel distribution, but the carbs are likely to restrict.

If it was mine, keep the manifold but sell the carbs to a Torrie fan who will appreciate them.

Cheers Harv for the very informative reply.

An interesting point you made about the HB Torana die hard looking for an original carby but I don’t think I will bank my cash into it hoping on that return any time soon.

Sure the manifold looks good but everything else would be essentially useless to me.

The bloke wanted absolute top dollar for them ($900) which I wasn’t prepared to pay unless they were some kind of whizz bang unit.
That kind of money is totally top dollar even for a full stromberg set up that could bolt on ready to go.
It had been for sale for a long time and now I know why they have not sold.

Drew,

I can't be certain, but the manifold looks awfully like a twin Stromberg manifold. Maybe, perhaps, the Zeniths have the same mounting flange dimensions as Strombergs.

Yes I did see them but I’m hoping for a complete running set with linkages.
