Control arm location spacer

Post by fraze »

There are two location spacers listed in the workshop manual used to set up the front control arms (wisbones). These are 3A5 upper and 3A6 lower. Does anyone have the widths of these two spacers? Thanks, Fraze

Fraze,

You don't really need the spacers when installing the control arms (I assume you're replacing the bushes, but re-using the shafts and control arms) -

Position the control arm so that there's equal protrusion of the control arm shaft beyond the control arm at front and rear, with the grease seals in place. Lube up the new bush with gear oil and start it on the shaft. The external threads should index into the control arm within half a turn. If they don't, unscrew the bush a full turn, move the control arm outward into the bush and try again. You'll notice when the threads index correctly. The other bush is installed similarly, except that if the external threads don't index correctly, get a jemmy between the crossmember and the control arm, and lever the end of the control arm outwards gently until the threads do index. Tighten both bushes up against the control arm, but don't overtighten - the control arm will be stiff to turn if this happens.

King pin front suspensions like lots of caster. So the bottom control arms can be positioned with more clearance to the crossmember at the front, and the upper control arms with more clearance to the crossmember at the rear.

Warning - replacement bushes have oversize outer threads, which will make them bloody tight to install: a long length of water pipe on the breaker bar.

Thanks for the replies, should be helpful. I did find the dimensions of the spacers. the top spacer is 20mm wide and the lower control arm spacer is 38mm wide. CXheers, Fraze
