Intermittent speedo problem

Post by Shaggy »

Hi,
I have a FB with a red motor and a trimatic. The speedo works for about half an hour of driving then just stops working. It happens more often than not. Does anyone have any ideas? I checked the speedo driven gear (23 teeth) inside the trans but it does not look that worn.

Does the speedo stop after 30 minutes, and stay stopped (even if you pull over and stop the car, then take off again)?

If so, go for a drive, and observe the speedo working. Once the speedo stops, pull over and unscrew the cable from the back of the dash. Drive off again, and see if the cable is spinning. If it is still spinning, the problem is in the speedo itself. If the cable is not spinning, you have a cable/gearbox problem.

Cheers,

Damn those 60’s electronics. They never were very reliable.
