Not all Grey Motors are the same
About a month ago I picked up a couple of grey motors.
There seem to be some minor differences between them. The biggest being that in one head the temperature sensor has a seperate appeture to fit into, whereas the other has some contraption that looks like it would be more at home on a Stanley Steamer.
You can see that this head has the temp sensor up the front and the heater outlet toward the rear of the head. Engine #: B284271.
This one only has one outlest and hence the strange steam pipe arrangement. Engine # on this one is: J94086.
If anyone can shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Not all Grey Motors are the same
I think they are just hot water taps for heater cores and Warmarides. I've seen a few different kinds in my years. Steve Jackson and SunnyTim probably would know more.

Yeh, your right Stygian.
What I am really wanting to know is whether either of these engines is more period specific to the FB. I wouldn't mind using one out of an EJ, but I reckon a 132 out of an FX/FJ might be doing the car a little injustice.

Re: Not all Grey Motors are the same
i think the one with the B engine No is an FB engine
Re: Not all Grey Motors are the same
Hi B/B,
My original engine number was B210600 - the vehicle was first registered here in Vic in Aug 1961. Your "B" engine (if it came off the assembly line here in Vic..) would be 7 thousand odd motors hence...
frats,
Rosco

Re: Not all Grey Motors are the same
I cant help with numbers but I do know that the early greys in the fj etc had smaller welsh plugs. Not really noticiable but to the trained eye easy to tell apart.

Re: Not all Grey Motors are the same
Thanks for all the help guys, but what I am after is as close to a definitive answer to which models these engines are out of.
Based on simple logic I reckon Rosco is on the right track and so that engine would be either an EK or EJ motor, if the other one is as well sweet. But if anyone can really pinpoint what these engines are out of, that would be great.

Re: Not all Grey Motors are the same
First heater outlet is a stock EJ? item - simple but effective (and bloody expensive on evilpay)
The other outlet was designed by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1507 - simple but effective and butt ugly. The J also has the later oil breather........
See - told you I was useless

Re: Not all Grey Motors are the same
So I have an EJ heater tap on an EK motor, and an antique heater, temp sensor steam pipe on the ej motor?
What is with the different head castings?
Thanks vmx-mxr

Re: Not all Grey Motors are the same
Bigbird,
I've being doing some internet hunting of late to better understand my own grey (and working out how to fit the heater to it). In terms of identifying the block:
· FX numbers started at 1001
· FJ numbers started at 121694
· FE numbers started at L283373
· FC numbers at L439507
· FB numbers started at B1001
· EK numbers started at B175814
· EJ numbers started at J1001
As well as changing engine blocks in the vehicle, it’s also possible that the cylinder head, thermostat housing and water pump may have been changed over time (eg FE block with EJ head). As a guide:
FX and FJ: small plug in lower thermostat housing for heater return hose, one hole in cylinder head (for temperature idiot-light switch), plug in water pump housing for heater supply line.
FE and FC: 3/8" plug in lower thermostat housing for heater return hose, one hole in cylinder head (for temperature idiot-light switch), plug in water pump housing for heater supply line.
FB, EK and EJ: No plug in lower thermostat housing for heater return hose, two holes in cylinder head (one for temperature idiot-light switch and one for heater return hose), plug in water pump housing for heater supply line.
Note that most of the above comes from internet trawling - I may be wrong , and happy to hear from anyone if I am .
My aim (once I get the heater into the car!) is to draft up a decent "how-to" paper for the Nasco Warmaride heaters (including the info above) with lots of photos and hopefully a guide on how to home-make a replacement heater core. Still hunting for a copy of the original fitting instruction sheet though (anyone?).
