EK Fuel Gauge pegs to the right on ignition.
EK Fuel Gauge pegs to the right on ignition.
Hi Guys
My fuel gauge flies way over to the right on ignition.
Clearly some sort of short.
Had a quick look behind the dash and everything looks ok ... where should I be looking for the culprit ?
Thanks
Steve

Re: EK Fuel Gauge pegs to the right on ignition.
Don't ask my children. Every time they drive my car, the fuel gauge pegs over to the left
How they manage to get the car home, and into the driveway with not enough left in it to start is beyond me. Ninja fuel management skills.
Pegging to the right means the sender is sending LOTS of resistance. Sender wire broken, sender wire disconnected in the boot, sender wire filthy dirty, tank not earthed...
Cheers,
Harv

Like Harv said , find the wire in the boot - short it to earth. If the gauge then reads empty the problem is in the sender in the tank.

Re: EK Fuel Gauge pegs to the right on ignition.
Harv & Blacky are both correct.
The wire to the fuel tank sender or the sender itself is open circuit.
A short circuit will hold the gauge to the empty position, but an open circuit will send it to full.

Thanks guys,
Shorted the sender output tab back to the tank as per Blacky's tip... fuel gauge pegged back to the other side.
Fuel sender .... are these things serviceable ?

Not really. I just swapped mine out for another one I had when I had issues. New reproduction are available from Rare Spares I believe.
If bones were on here he would take it on though.

Yes, they are serviceable... kind of. From memory, someone here (I thought it was Clay, but apparently not) pulled one apart by drilling out rivets and cleaning... can't remember where that post is on the forum though. They are also available new from Rare Spares.

Re: EK Fuel Gauge pegs to the right on ignition.
Before you get too carried away replacing it - try running an earth wire from the sender to ground . Sometimes the only problem with them is the sender isn't correctly earthed. You can hose clamp a wire to it or put one under one of the hold down screws and put the other end to the chassis of the car

It almost goes without saying that the first thing is to ensure a decent earth to the sender.

Re: EK Fuel Gauge pegs to the right on ignition.
Great news ... got the sender going ! Thanks for all the help and suggestions, Guys.
I popped the cover off and gave the sender area it's regular 60+ year clean up ... but still no joy.
It's clear the earth for the sender is through the 6 screws holding it in place .. so I backed each one off individually, and give them all a petrol soaked brush and clean underneath. That did the trick
