1st and reverse!

Post by D-MAN »

Can’t get the old girl in 1st gear or reverse... what is the most likely culprit?

Hi D Man
Had a similar problem with my crash box in not being able to select second. You might need to do some adjustment to the gear selector rods where they come in to the steering column. Reference to the manual should help to show where the gear level should be at various gear positions. I'm sure the gurus on here will be able to pinpoint the problem.

1st and reverse live on the same shaft, on the passenger's side of the gearbox. 2nd and 3rd live on the other shaft, on the drivers side. The selector shaft control lever (the little lever that hangs out the bottom of the box, not the side) moves between the two sides of the gearbox.

If you can get 2nd and 3rd, but not 1st and reverse, it generally means that selector shaft control lever is not doing what it is supposed to. Check that the control lever is not overly sloppy. The long rods (from the steering column to the control lever) tend to flog out the hole in the control lever. You can weld up and redrill the hole, or can fit a rubber grommet.

If the slop is not the problem, adjust the linkage... see page 92:
