About 2 hours out of Sydney and on my way to Renmark Old Timer jumped out of 3rd gear. It happened again 2 more times over then Nats weekend. All times I was either on the flat or going up a slight rise. The box was fully rebuilt about 3 years ago. I think it's a FJ gearbox and its mated up to an EJ block.
Any suggestions on troubleshooting?

Back in the 70s my mate had an occy strap rigged up to hold his EH wagon in top. I know you wouldn't be satisfied with a bandaid solution though Stu.

Re: Jumping out of 3rd gear
G'day Stu,
You're supposed to hang your manbag off the gear lever to stop it jumping out of third .
If Tim's suggestions don't help, it could be that your detent springs are weak/stuck.
Using a 5/16” allen key, remove the offending shifter shaft lock spring and ball lock screw (hint: first and reverse is on the passenger side of the car, and second and third is on the driver’s side). Pick the spring and ball out with a “magnet on a stick” tool. Check that the spring free length is approximately 11/8”. Clean up the spring and ball in some kerosene, and use a pipe cleaner to clean any gunk out of the channel in the gearbox casing. Reassemble. If slop is still present, it may be necessary to swap for another spring, or to use a collet/stack of washers on top of the spring to give it more tension.
Cheers,
Harv
