Underway - 5-Speed Conversion

Post by Mai Ki-Ki »

What have I done....! :econfused:

Old 3 speed is out, big hole in it's place, which is about to get bigger as I have to cut out a section of the tunnel / inspection plate / crossmember.
Won't be the same hump as the auto, so will have to custom fit the front carpet....and have a quite modified shifter to miss the front bench.

New 'hump' and crossmember to follow....

Here's the 5 Speed *sillycar* box and Dellows Adapter Bell Housing......

They sent me the wrong throw out bearing and clutch plate  so it won't be all together this week.

Stay tuned, full Step by Step How-To will follow....

No way now.....started about a week too late.
Parts took ages to get here, and then had setbacks getting some muscle to help me mock up the box as it's 50kilos....oh well.

Maiki,

Hows the conversion going, I'm interested to get your opinion on how the 5 speed goes behind the grey, are you running a stock diff centre?? I ran a 4.11 gear set in the 9" diff in my old 28 Hiboy with a 5 speed supra box and had the best of both worlds, great acceleration off the mark and overdrive for highway cruising

Had a two week break after not getting it finished for Chopped Car SHow.
Now there's a great big hole in the tunnel, and it needs a reworked x-member.....tail-shaft measured ready for shortening and the Toyota end added...
Hope to be bolting it all back together late next week. :eugeek:

Found out I need a red motor pressure plate (that apparently bolts straight up to the grey flywheel) then the Dellows clutch plate will fit.....

Driveshaft being shortened as we speak.

Getting there...

Would you believe Sunday...?

Box works a treat, tunnel 2/3 fabbed. Structurally sound, just needs to be fully sealed now before I put the carpets back in....Weird going from 3 - 5 gears!

Hi Mai Ki-ki

Can you put up a few pictures of your gearbox mount.
I also have the 5 speed bolted up in place. Clutch works sweet.
Scored a trans hump on ebay off a bloke at Erskine park .
Its on its way.
Started to make the gearbox mount. .. would help to see a few photos of how you fabricated it..
Trying to make it solid to help make up for cutting the strengthened section out of the original floor pan.
Would like to put a "rib"on the bottom side of the trans hump too. ... all adds to stiffening things up in the floor pan.

Keep reminding myself that there is only the 2 engine mounts on the cross member and the one at the rear of the box holding all the weight.
I suppose it was just as flimsy when the grey was in there... one mount at the front.. 2 at the rear of the motor and the gearbox just swinging in the breeze with nothing supporting it...

I have a rear mount for celica to EH conversion but it is nothing like what is needed for FB/EK.

Maybe a few other members can stick a photo of their Celica gearbox mount conversion on here too..???
