Radiator for V8 EK ? What are you V8 guys using?

Post by Rusty EK »

G.day All

Just wondering the best Radiator to fit into the ute to keep its cool, what are all you guys with V8,s already in running ?

Do I need to spend dollars on one of those flash alum jobs or can I get away with a commodore radiator or similar , would love to know what you guys have used for ease of fitting .

Cheers
Chris

I set my v8 FC up with a VR v6 Commo radiator,it never over heated ,the thermo rarely come on while in traffic.Keep in mind there is a little bit of work in setting it up.They aren't that exy to replace if it gets damaged either.

Thanks Guys , would love one of those flash alum ones like the desert coolers, but have so many other things to spend money on at the moment so looking to save a few bucks .

Was going to go for an HQ one but my wife has just got a VR wagon that she is using parts out of for her project, which has a good radiator in it . :D

So ozbumpkin you have made my day , was wondering if it would be big enough for the V8 , so it looks like I will rat that one and fit it up, have you got any pictures of yours fitted? looks like will need to cut the top support out a bit to fit it , have only had a quick look at it .

Rusty EK,
A late response - sounds like your'e going the VR route. I've got a 327 in the EK wagon, and had the same dilema on radiator choice. I ended up going for an automatic VL Commodore radiator, as the inlet/outlet matched the Chev layout. The radiator core was the same size as the one in my 308 VK Calais, so overheating shouldn't be too bad. Didn't have to notch the rails, but did have to recess the radiator support bar. Running twin thermofans as space is a little tight for an engine fan. Hasn't done any road miles yet... scary enough trundling around the yard with only the handbrake for anchors.
327 Chev EK wagon, original EK ute for Number 1 Daughter, an FB sedan meth monster project and a BB/MD grey motored FED.

Thanks Harv, sounds like the commy radiator will be the go then , mmm yes space is tight , and not sure if I will be able to fit a thermo on the inside either, maybe offset it to one side ? will have a play with it on the weekend.
Ozbumpkin thanks for the photos , very helpful :D

for the cost of buying a HQ type radiator you only need to trim the side of the panel in front of the radiator and drill 4 holes i even ran an engine fan on both cars i even had a big 4 core in one with no dramas, but then looking at yor work a little bit of fab work will be nothing
