Re: EK Fuel Gauge pegs to the right on ignition.

Don't ask my children. Every time they drive my car, the fuel gauge pegs over to the left  How they manage to get the car home, and into the driveway with not enough left in it to start is beyond me. Ninja fuel management skills. Pegging to the right means the sender is sending LOTS of resistan...

Re: Gearbox connecting rod. Bush needed?

The little bakelite insulating sleeves, bakelite spring doover and horn contact get fussy on how they are installed. Hint: before pulling ANY of the steering wheel apart, disconnect the battery. That sounds like the kind of advice you would get in a generic Gregory's service manual, but it is for a ...

Re: Gearbox connecting rod. Bush needed?

If you get stuck, I have a puller I can loan you. Easier to troubleshoot if we understand what you pulled apart, and what changed. Was the horn working before you started? How much of the horn bar, steering wheel, horn contacts, honeypot, levers did you pull apart to reinstall 3-on-the-tree? Cheers,...

Re: Hand-crank for grey motor

I went to sea when I was 17 and the ship I was on had a 2 cylinder Lister emergency air compressor, if you got the cranking wrong when you dropped the decompression cocks it would throw you into the bulkhead     They only tell young apprentices about decompression levers after w...

Re: Harv's FED thread

Thanks gents. I've got one of those cable-stoppers on order, and will see if I can make it work. You'd think that a cable-to-valve handle fitting would be common, but not so much in practice. The ARP bolts are 44-47 Rockwell C. On Moh's scale of hardness, they appear here: Hardness Material 1 Talc 2...

Re: Red Rattler Revamp

A trick I learned from Rob (with thanks).

The cast iron wheel cylinders are fine for daily drivers.

Anything that sits for more than a month between drives needs stainless-lined wheel cylinders.

Cheers,
Harv (master of leaky rear wheel cylinder changes).

Re: Hand-crank for grey motor

Yep, had my share of hand cranking. Back when there was Aerostart and ether, but no Start Ya Bastard. Learned that Lister is a four-letter word. Good thing on the FED is that the huffer lets me run low compression, and I can get a bit of a crank up before unearthing the magneto. Even better is I can...

Re: Hand-crank for grey motor

I am seriously contemplating it. If the IHRA rules let me, and if I need the weight loss to get the FED below the 10.99 second elapsed time class limit, then I will delete the starter motor. The crank fitting will be a little different to the factory GMH one, but will serve the same purpose. Cheers,...

Re: Harv's FED thread

I use a similar setup on a smaller scale for choke on SU carbs. The clamped cable and an over sized bolt head effectively sandwiches the lever, preventing the body from escaping. Ahhh... thankyou. Now I can picture it. Something like this: cable stopper.jpg That might work, if the arm is wide enoug...

Re: Harv's FED thread

I can buy those barrel clamps (cable stops) readily, but can't picture in my head what the assembly would look like?

Re: Harv's FED thread

Something so simple is driving me nuts. The fuel system on the FED needs a fuel shutoff valve. This is a simple ball valve with AN flared fittings, and a 1/4" thick handle that moves through 90º. The valve is operated via a bowden cable from the cockpit. To attach the cable to the valve handle ...

Re: Harv's McGee injection thread

Piecing together a historic fuel injection system has proven to be far from easy. I have a bunch of pumps, including three McGee pumps. I really, really wanted to use a McGee pump with the McGee injector. Of the three pumps, only one is salvageable. That's a pretty low hit rate for pumps that were n...

13.6@103mph. A little off the pace (13.2), but it had nearly 100kg of extra fuel-and-passenger ballast.

Re: harvs ek 327 wagon

Carb replaced... ran better, but still not running right. Turns out the MSD dizzy had corroded, and the advance had become sticky. Timing all over the place at times, fine at others. Dizzy pulled, overhauled and back in. New carb dynoed. After a frustrating few months chasing it, nice to have it run...
